It sounds dramatic, but for me bringing my own container when I’m in suddenly in the mood for some street-side mung bean porridge is just such a hassle! So, I end up using their disposable plastic. When my stomach rumbles and I crave for some tipat cantok (rice cake wrapped in a coconut leaf pouch with peanut sauce), I can’t enjoy it without my two portions of kerupuk, or crackers. Sadly, they are only ever sold wrapped in plastic, at Rp.1,000 a piece. In the early days of its creation, plastic was a man-made solution so that we could reduce our dependency on other natural resources. For example, based on www.sciencehistory.org, in 1869, John Wesley Hyatt invented the ‘synthetic polymer’ that replaced the raw material for billiard balls that used to be made of ivory. Everyone can celebrate this. In 1907, Leo Baekeland discovered Bakelite, the first synthetic plastic whose molecules were not found in nature so that it could be produced alone without the help of natural materials. Bakelite is considered stronger, heat resistant, and can be used multiple times. Then, between the 1960s and1980s, plastic’s “angel” status was stripped away with the discovery of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, said to be the size of Texas. The anxiety increased with a new found understanding that with heat, waves, UV light and bacteria, this said garbage patch has now been broken down into micro-plastics, which apparently we are all enjoying through our seafood. “The level of micro-plastic in Indonesia’s oceans is only 30-960 particles per litre,” according to Reza Cordova, a researcher from the Oceanographic Research Center of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (P2O LIPI) who surveyed 12 areas of Indonesian waters from 2015 to 2017. Here I present a series about the plastic that is part of my everyday life, which serves a reminder. Now I have begun to reduce my use of plastic as much as possible, but such practices must become habitual, remembering to say “no straw, please”, when I order a drink, for example. These will come over time. In the life of a modern human, I don’t think we will ever fully escape plastic. However, we can take note from Balinese philosophy to help us on our journey to becoming plastic-free. Rethinking Recycling believes that behavior change is critical to solving the waste crisis and fixing the broken recycling value chain. Households are the critical first step in the value chain where the fate of waste is decided, whether it will be recycled and put back into productive use or sent to landfill. The melodies will ring out over the village, inviting everyone to the enchanting world of Indonesian music. As part of the curriculum, it is essential to have the tools necessary to bring the ancient rhythms to life. Thus, a gamelan was specially made and ordered at the Sidi Rahayu gamelan casting place in Sawan, Buleleng, North Bali. A breathtaking work of art, the gamelan had to be unique and follow the latest trends. Located near the sea, it is a perfect marriage of form and function, with maritime-themed panels depicting the rich history of Les Village and some prominent Amisewaka activities. The North Bali-style carved gamelan is a riot of bright colors, its beauty matched only by its intricate design. It is no wonder then that the gamelan's name, Segara Madu, meaning "Honey Ocean," was inspired by the magnificent coastline that surrounds the village. Wayan Dibia, Emeritus Professor at the Indonesian Art Institute in Denpasar, Bali, bestowed the name upon the gamelan. This new gamelan is more than just a musical instrument. It is a gateway to Hindu philosophy, local history, and the elements that make up the Amisewaka Les Village Community Center. The panels display pictures that are easy to follow, telling the story of Les Village's salt farmers, garden prosperity, and the sacred turtles that are believed by Balinese people to be the foundation of their island. The long instruments, trompong and barangan (reyong), feature the faces of Dewa Siwa (God of Transformation) and Dewi Danu (Goddess of the Lake), who are brought to life in a magnetic rainbow of colors emanating from their faces. The gayor or gong stand has Nawa Sanga (9 holy directions) flanked by two dragons at the top. The gamelan is a cultural treasure, not only for the village but for Bali as a whole. It provides an opportunity for students and visitors to experience and appreciate the rich heritage of Indonesia's music and art. The story of Dewi Danu, who blessed Les Village with water centuries ago, is a reminder of the cultural significance of this new gamelan. The Bali Mula are the original inhabitants of Bali who believe their ancestors descended directly from heaven, while the ancestors of the mainland Balinese migrated from Java bringing Majapahit Hindusim to the island. October 2014 was an auspicious time for the Bali Mula to hold the Saba Gede temple ceremony for their gods. The celebration was held for one month, ending with the Barong Brutuk performance. Brutuk is derived from the words baru tuwuk, meaning ‘to meet.’ This performance symbolizes the meeting between Ratu Ayu Pingit Dalem Dasar and Ratu Sakti Pancering Jagat, who are believed to be the ancestors of the Trunyan people. In Trunyan mythology, Ratu Ayu Pingit Dalem Dasar was the daughter of a goddess who had descended to the earth and was impregnated by the god of the sun. She married Ratu Sakti Pancering Jagat (or Betara Da Tonta), the eldest son of King Dalem Solo. Betara Da Tonta is considered to be a manifestation of Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (God Almighty). The Barong Brutuk performance is a form of worship to their supreme god Betara Da Tonta and is also dedicated to increasing fertility in the Trunyan village. The holy Barong Brutuk performance is a dance by adolescent Trunyan boys who are first quarantined for 42 days, during which time they are not allowed to consume alcoholic drinks, gamble or date. They stay in quarters called bangsal pekemitan that are built specifically for the Kapat Lanang ceremony. Whip Lashes as a ‘Cure’When the dancers enter the open stage in the outer part of the Pancering Jagat Village Temple (built in 10th century AD or 833 Çaka according to the Balinese calendar), the audience shouts out, “Meriki Tu, meriki” meaning “Come here please, come here,” which is then answered by the Betara Brutuk with whipping. The whipping is believed to be a method to ensure fertility. Some women make offerings in the form of sesari (donation money), cigarettes or energy drinks for the Barong Brutuk, and then tear a little piece off of the keraras leaves worn by the Betara Brutuk to be used as a talisman. At the end of the performance the Betara Brutuk dancers perform the metambak procession, which is a love scene between Betara Da Tonta and Ratu Ayu Pingit Dalem Dasar. This final scene is considered to be very important because it determines the fertility of the universe and all its contents. If this scene fails, it is believed that the dancers will suffer the unfortunate fate of remaining unmarried for the rest of their lives. At the end of the performance both characters embrace, then dressed only in their loincloths, they run into the lake to bathe and purify themselves. Before leaving the lake there is a small selamatan ceremony done to return the masks into their large bamboo basket. Ketut is a resident of Dusun Dalem, the most remote hamlet of Tianyar Tengah village in the Kubu district of Karangasem regency. Kubu district is in the most arid mountainous region of Karangasem. The district has nine villages, which includes the 1,605 hectare Tianyar Tengah village, which has 12 hamlets, more than all the other villages. For the past 20 years, the villagers of the 12 hamlets have mostly depended on two artesian wells made available by the local government. Dusun Dalem hamlet, which is about 1.5 hours by car (42 kilometers) from the Karangasem administration offices, only had electricity installed last August, while roads were first asphalted in 2010. Made Sudica Ambara, division head for village community development (PMD) for Kubu district, said that the administration had done everything from building rainwater butts — locally known as cubang — to operating a mobile water tank; the latter he acknowledged had yet to operate in Tianyar Tengah, which has more than 2,397 families. “The vast and mountainous terrains are just too difficult to reach,” Sudica said. “It’s just ridiculous that there’s only one water tanker for more than 1,000 families. What about licensing a private company to run the mobile water tanker? There’s just no political will from the government to fix this situation,” regretted I’m An Angel program director Asana Viebeke Lengkong. Currently, to have the tanker deliver 5,000 liters of water up the hill would cost up to Rp 150,000 (US$16) in delivery expenses, thus the rainwater harvesting method has been seen as the most economical way to fulfill the residents’ water needs, at least during rainy times. There are currently some small cubang scattered around Dusun Dalem hamlet. “Unfortunately, they didn’t build the cubang properly, which resulted in poor quality water being available for consumption,” said Viebeke during a recent visit to the hamlet to deliver funding for the construction of four properly designed cubang worth a total of Rp 60 million as part of the I’m An Angel program, which has helped build 28 cubang around the Kubu district. Due to low awareness of health and sanitation, most, if not all, villagers consume the water directly from the cubang, which is mostly covered with moss. “After facilitating the discussion on how to build the cubang properly, and where to get the building materials, such sand and stones, we provide the cash for the villagers involved in carrying the materials up the hill and in the overall construction,” said Viebeke, as she highlighted the community-participatory approach of the I’m An Angel programs, which cover interrelated aspects of education, health, nutrition, economic empowerment and environmental awareness. Beside the cubang construction support, other economic empowerment efforts also include microfinancing for the villagers to raise their own cattle and to produce value-added products from the natural harvests that are abundant in the area, which includes cashew nuts and papyrus that can be processed into sugar products and rattan plates. “The villagers usually sell their cashew nuts raw, which only brings in Rp 8,000 per kilogram, while if they process the nuts as snacks, they can get as much as Rp 80,000 to Rp 90,000 per kilogram,” said Clementus Jehanam, a worker on the Pemuda Sarjana Penggerak Pembangunan di Pedesaan (Rural Development Motivator) PSP-3 program, which has been newly launched by the Youth and Sports Ministry. Coordinator of the Bali PSP-3, Dharmawan acknowledged that language had become the main barrier to approach the villagers, most of whom did not speak Indonesian fluently and were unable to read or write. “These remote villages are a completely different world, a different culture. Language skills are essential,” said Viebeke, a non-Balinese who speaks the language and has lived in Kuta since the 1970s. “Government officials can’t just work behind their desks, they have to actively reach out to these people, because the villagers are not going to come to your offices,” said Viebeke, citing the urgency for the local administration to collaborate with companies running corporate social responsibility programs on the island to improve the livelihood of those living in remote areas.   Words by Agnes Winarti. Bali highlight this occasion at Puputan Margarana, Renon with 3.600 yoga practitioners participating in the celebration, a number that was immediately sanctioned by MURI (Indonesian World Records Museum) as a new record for the most people practicing yoga at a single location in Indonesia. Earlier, in the welcome remarks, Consul General of India in Bali A.S. Takhi thanked the Balinese government and the people for their support in organizing the first global celebration of yoga in Denpasar, while highlighting the origin and benefits of practicing yoga. He emphasized that the philosophy of yoga was in resonance with the Balinese principle of Tri Hita Karana-seeking yo bring harmony between human beings, the creator and the environment. At the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, the United Nations declared June 21 to be observed as the International Day of Yoga. As many as 177 countries in the United Nations General Assembly co-sponsored the resolution, including India, Indonesia, China and the US. Recently, yoga teaching has been practiced increasingly in gyms and dedicated centers around the world. But some Christian fundamentalists argued that yoga’s Hindu roots conflict with Christian teachings. Egypts’s highest theological body also banned yoga for Muslims in 2004. Known as Besakih, the largest Hindu temple complex in the country, it is the mother temple for Balinese Hindus. It houses not only the shrines for the gods, but also the ancestors of all Balinese clans. Raja Purana Besakih, a semi-historical treatise on the temple, stipulates that it is excepted from all the four abstinences of Nyepi: abstinence from lighting any fire or light, from traveling outside one’s house, from performing work, and from any leisure activity. Since early in the morning on Nyepi day, devotees had arrived in Besakih to pray and spend the night there. Mungkin semacam itulah para tuan tanah menguasai lahan di masa lalu. Mereka kemudian membuka perbekalan makanan yang telah disiapkan dari rumah. Ketupat dan oporadalah primadona hari itu. Pantai memang tempat rekreasi yang menyenangkan. Di situ keriangan bisa didapat dengan mudah dan murah. Tapi, ketika rekreasi menjadi bagian yang semakin penting dalam gaya hidup modern, di mana uang dapat membeli hampir semua hal, maka pantai-pantai pun berangsur mengalami komodifikasi sehinggasebagiannya berubah menjadi kawasan yang kesenangannya tidak lagi dapat dinikmati secara cuma-cuma. Lihat saja, sekitar 15 meter di belakang areal yang diduduki Nasrul. Terhampar wahana rekreasi air yang untuk menikmatinya harus mengeluarkan sejumlah rupiah. Memang tak seluruhnya mahal, tapi semuanya harus berbayar. Pantai di mana Nasrul dan keluarganya menggelar tikar untuk mendedah obrolan itu adalah satu di antara sekian pantai Bali yang telah mengalami komodifikasi. Di situ wahana asli dan buatan bersanding. Sejauh ini, keduanya masih terasa dalam harmoni. Tapi, banyak orang mulai merasakan bahwa satu di antara keduanya mulai mengangkangi vibrasi yang lainnya. Apa boleh buat, gaya hidup yang ingin serba cepat dan mudah telah mengubah pula cara pandang orang terhadap alam. Juga cara mengukur kenyamanan dan kesenangan. Dan, kaum bermodal memanfaatkannya dengan sangat baik untuk keuntungan sebesar-besarnya. Kini, adalah pemandangan lumrah alam ditakik, dibor, diuruk, dipasangi instalasi, atau apa saja yangmengubah wajah aslinya.
